1. UP Bypolls: BJP Loses Gorakhpur, Phulpur

After over two decades, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost the Gorakhpur bypolls to Samajwadi Party (SP) by a margin of 21,960 votes.

The SP also bagged the bypolls in Phulpur, which was deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s bastion with a margin of 59, 613 votes.

Speaking after winning the Phulpur bypoll, SP candidate Nagendra Singh Patel told the media that he got the blessings Mayawati, and parties with similar ideologies got together and won.

2. Bihar Bypolls: RJD Retains Araria, Jehanabad, BJP Retains Bhabua

Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) managed to retain turf in Araria by a margin of 61,988 votes.

The RJD also bagged Jehanabad while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won Bhabua.

RJD candidate Krishna Mohan beat BJP to clinch the Jehanabad assembly seat, while BJP’s Rinky Rani Pandey beat RJD candidate to win the Bhabua assembly.

3. Physicist & Cosmologist Stephen Hawking Dies at 76

British theoretical physicist and renowned cosmologist Stephen Hawking passed away at the age of 76, a family spokesperson told news agencies on 14 March.

Professor Stephen William Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 (exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo) in Oxford, England, to Frank and Isobel Hawking.

Hawking lived with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, since his time at the Oxford University. He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 1963, at the age of 21.

4. ‘Were Forced to Write We’re Lesbians,’ Say Girls of Kolkata School

“Write that you have put your hands in your friend’s blouse; that you’ve tickled them under their skirt, hugged them and held their hands.”

This was what was allegedly said to a group of 12 girls, aged 13, in Kolkata’s Kamala Girls’ High School, who were threatened with expulsion because they were “suffering from homosexual behaviour”.

According to allegations by parents and students, on 9 March 2018, the teacher-in-charge or acting headmistress of the school, Shikha Sarkar, asked 12 students to write that they were indulging in certain behaviour that was not civilised and sexual in nature. They were told that they were being asked to do so based on a complaint by a fellow student.

The parents have submitted all the signed letters to the police and a complaint has been the lodged. However, an FIR is yet to be registered.
