1. Sterlite Row: 13 Killed, Vedanta Chairman ‘Saddened’ Over Events

Chaos ensued at the chief minister’s office in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, 24 May, after DMK leader MK Stalin was detained for protesting against the violence in Tuticorin. Meanwhile, CM Edappadi Palaniswami broke his silence on the issue and said the police fired on the protesters to “defend and safeguard themselves”.

At least 13 people were killed after the months-long protest demanding the closure of Vedanta's Sterlite copper unit in Tuticorin turned violent on 22 May.

The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded senior leader S Suresh Kumar as a candidate in the election for the post of Karnataka Assembly Speaker to be held on Friday, 25 May. Meanwhile, the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) have selected Ramesh Kumar as their Assembly Speaker candidate.

HD Kumaraswamy took oath as the chief minister of Karnataka on Wednesday, as the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Congress formed the government in the state. Congress’ G Parameshwara took oath as the deputy chief minister.

4. PM Modi, Anushka, Virat Join Fitness Challenge, Twitter Explodes

Challenge accepted! Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the latest to jump on the #FitnessChallenge bandwagon by accepting Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli’s challenge.

It started with a tweet and a video by Union Sports Minister Rajyavarshan Singh Rathore in which he got on all fours and did some pushups and threw a #FitnessChallenge to Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli, badminton champ Saina Nehwal and actor Hrithik Roshan. This is part of #HumFitTohIndiaFit campaign to promote fitness in India.
