Within minutes of its initial order, the Supreme Court on Tuesday, 14 May, waived the condition of apology and ordered the immediate release of BJP youth wing worker Priyanka Sharma, who was arrested on 10 May for posting a morphed picture of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her Facebook page.
Though the condition has been waived, the Supreme Court reportedly still wants her to apologise.
Earlier, the SC bench comprising Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Sanjiv Khanna had asked Sharma to tender a written apology to the West Bengal chief minister on being released.
The SC has also agreed to hear the larger issues of violation of free speech after the vacations are over.

In a scathing attack on Narendra Modi, Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar accused the prime minister of being guilty of “anti-national activity” in trying to “ride on sacrifices of the army and CRPF martyrs” in a “dirty” election campaign.
Taking a shot at the PM over his recent “cloud cover” remark and his claim “of using email, digital camera in 1988,” Aiyar wrote: “... modern India must cultivate a ‘scientific temper,’ an expression that drives sanghis nuts because they like to believe the ‘udan khatolas’ of mythology were the earliest F-16s to be invented by Hindus, and that Hindu plastic surgery, not a transplant operation, is what led to an elephant’s head surmounting Lord Ganesh.”
