Gilu Joseph found herself in the middle of a controversy in March 2018, when she posed as a breastfeeding mother for the cover of Mathrubhumi’s bi-weekly Grihalakshmi, with the text on the magazine cover stating, “Mothers tell Kerala: please stop staring, we need to breastfeed.”
Not one, but TWO citizens filed petitions against Grihalakshmi and Gilu Joseph, claiming that the cover photo was “obscene” and violated the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act as well as the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences Act.
The Kerala High Court dismissed the petitions in June 2018, stating, “As beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, so does obscenity, perhaps.”

Amid multi-tier security cover, the first batch of pilgrims for the annual Amarnath Yatra left from Jammu's Bhagwati Nagar base camp on Wednesday, 27 June.
