Former UPA telecom minister A Raja, DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi and 15 others were acquitted on Thursday, 21 December, of charges in the 2G spectrum "scam". Judge OP Saini read out a single-line verdict – “all acquitted of all charges”.
The judgement said that investigators "miserably failed" to prove that Raja, along with officials from companies that won the licenses for telecom services, had conspired to receive kickbacks from the sale of phone permits, causing a loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the public exchequer.

Minutes after all the accused in the 2G spectrum case, including former telecom minister A Raja and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, were acquitted by Delhi’s Patiala House court, DMK supporters took to the roads to celebrate special judge OP Saini’s one-line verdict.
Politicians from the DMK and the Congress party expressed their satisfaction with the court’s verdict. “I would love to thank everyone who stood by me,” Kanimozhi said.
Reacting to the verdict, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told reporters outside the Parliament that the scandal was "massive propaganda".

The RK Nagar by-election was held on Thursday, 21 December, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of sitting MLA and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa in December last year.
The key contenders in the poll are ruling AIADMK's E Madhusudhanan, main opposition DMK candidate N Maruthu Ganesh and sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran, contesting as an Independent.
Though as many as 59 candidates are in the fray including from the BJP, it is mainly seen as a fight between the AIADMK, its rival faction led by Dhinakaran, and DMK.
