1.) Mob Lynchings: Woman Beaten to Death in MP; Man Killed in Rajasthan on WhatsApp “Rumours”

A mob of villagers lynched a young woman in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh, late 22 July night, reportedly on suspicion that she was a child-lifter based on messages being shared on WhatsApp.

The woman is believed to be in her mid-twenties, approximately 25 years old. Police confirmed that the woman was killed based on rumours of child-lifters circulating on WhatsApp.

A few days prior to this, a man named Akbar Khan was beaten to death by a mob who accused him of cow smuggling in Rajasthan’s Alwar district on Friday, 20 July, reported ANI.

The mob caught the two men, who were on foot, and brutally beat them. Aslam later that the police first called a vehicle to take the cows to a shelter, then took the bleeding victim to first the police station where he was beaten up, and then the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. This version was backed by an eyewitness Naval Kishore Sharma, who identifies as a gau rakhsak.

2.) Exclusive: Swami Agnivesh Questions PM Modi’s Silence on Lynching

Days after being attacked by a mob at Pakur in Jharkhand, social activist Swami Agnivesh has alleged that the district administration has not taken adequate action in the matter.

In an exclusive interview with The Quint, the 78-year-old social activist recounted the horrors of 17 July, when workers of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) allegedly attacked him and ripped his signature turban off his head.

Agnivesh alleged that the Jharkhand Police has not been probing the matter with due diligence. Eight persons were named in the FIR. However, they were released a day after the attack, he said.

3.) Clumsy Use of Propaganda Could Backfire on PM Modi

All politicians, without exception, use propaganda and punishment as a double-edged knife to wound their opponents. So, it’s not a question of “when” or “if”, but “how” these instruments are used.

Under Prime Minister Modi, his government could be making the error of using excessive primetime propaganda against its principal political opponent, Rahul Gandhi, trying to make him the fall-guy for everything!

What they ignore is that such an excessive propaganda misadventure could backfire, as it ends up giving the “halo of the political underdog” to its hapless victim.

4) Baroda Uni Scraps Kunal Kamra Show for ‘Anti-National’ Content

Comedian Kunal Kamra, who was supposed to host a stand-up comedy event at MS University of Baroda in Gujarat, received a surprise late 22 July night, after the university suddenly cancelled his show.

The event was scheduled to be held at the campus’ CC Mehta Complex on 11 August, and was cancelled following complaints from former students of the college, The Indian Express reported.

The university cancelled the event after a group of 11 former students claimed Kamra was “anti-national” and “supported Tukde-Tukde gang”.
