Watch: Cops Use Tear Gas on Farmers During Kisan Rally

Police used water cannons to disperse farmers protesting at Delhi-UP border during ‘Kisan Kranti Padyatra’.

Thousands of farmers called off their protest in the early hours of Wednesday, 3 October, after they were allowed to enter Delhi and travel to Kisan Ghat.

On Tuesday, these farmers held fort on the Delhi-UP border at Ghazipur after their protest march to the national capital was stopped by police. In the chaos that ensued, several protestors and security personnel were injured.

The police resorted to the use of tear gas shells and water cannons on the farmers marching under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) after the latter tried to break the barricade and enter Delhi.

The farmers were demanding farm loan waiver, implementation of the Swaminathan Committee report, cut in fuel prices, etc.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP of "brutally beating up" farmers at the Delhi border on International Day of Non-Violence and said that they cannot even air their grievances in the national capital.

Slamming the Modi government over the handling of the farmers' protest at the Delhi border, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said:

The Modi government has shown that it is no different from the pre-independence British government in India. British government then used to exploit the farmers and today the Modi govt is firing tear gas shells at farmers.

Along with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav also expressed solidarity with the protesting farmers.
