Sufi rock bands across Kashmir are becoming popular among the people of the Valley by mixing Sufi lyrics with rock music. The genre is attracting the new generation.

From the last few years, some music bands, like Blood Rockz have worked hard to bring this change in Kashmiri music. Kashmir is famous all over the world because of its unique culture, tradition and mostly, for its sufi poetry. However, as one of the band members claim, the same ceased to excite the young audience, which created the need for fusion music.

There have been very renowned singers and poets who have written sufi songs. But today’s youth listens to Rock. So we take the same sufi lyrics and remix it with rock music and make a fusion genre called sufi rock.

Through Sufi Rock, they aim to not only revive the love for sufiyana music and entertain people with the new trend, but also channel the youths’ energy towards something more peaceful.

The bands are drawing lots of attention, not just to themselves, but also to the Valley.

(The Quint, in association with BitGiving, has launched a crowdfunding campaign for an 8-month-old who was raped in Delhi on 28 January 2018. The baby girl, who we will refer to as 'Chhutki', was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin when her parents were away. She has been discharged from AIIMS hospital after undergoing three surgeries, but needs more medical treatment in order to heal completely. Her parents hail from a low-income group and have stopped going to work so that they can take care of the baby. You can help cover Chhutki's medical expenses and secure her future. Every little bit counts. Click here to donate.)
