Recently, the Supreme Court heard several petitions which challenge amendments to the Income Tax Act, making Aadhaar mandatory for PAN cards and filing IT returns. The hearing was held after amendments were introduced to Section 139A of the Income Tax Act through the Finance Bill 2017.

But really, what is the Aadhaar debate all about? Is the 12-digit Unique ID a threat to privacy? Is data safe with Aadhaar? And more importantly, is it compulsory or mandatory?
