Senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader Indresh Kumar is convinced that eating meat is similar to consuming poison. He also claims that prophet Mohammed, revered deeply by Muslims, had never consumed meat and had even proscribed his followers from doing so. Interestingly, Kumar made these comments at an Iftaar party organised by the RSS’s Muslim wing at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi.

Kumar also claimed that walking around a tulsi plant could help the faithful Muslims in gaining paradise and even keep enemies away. He also suggested the inclusion of cow milk in the list of beverages served after during Ramzan.

Kumar claimed his comments were made in the light of true Islamic principles. Those protesting his visit at the Central Varsity, the RSS leader added, had weaned away from the path of god and must rectify themselves.

Kumar’s comments were embraced by BJP lawmaker Subramanian Swamy, who cited cancer as one of the possible consequences of consuming red meat. Swamy congratulated Kumar for having expressed his opinions without fear.

But not everyone’s happy. Muslim Cleric Maulana Mufti Mukarram said the comments were absolutely wrong, and shouldn’t have been made without complete knowledge of Islam.

Similarly, the RJD’s Manoj Jha took an aim at Kumar, saying this his ‘divisive’ comments were triggered by ‘half-baked’ knowledge of Islam. He also added that Kumar is an expert in creating communal fissures and went to Jamia for the same purpose.
