Aimed at serving the poor at subsidised rates, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi inaugurated the ‘Indira canteen’ in Bengaluru on 16 August. He also had lunch at the canteen. While breakfast would cost Rs 5, lunch and dinner would cost just Rs 10.
“Indira Gandhiji spoke about food, cloth, shelter, and it is very important that every single person in this country has a filled stomach,” the Congress VP said during the inauguration.
The J Jayalalithaa-led Tamil Nadu government had in 2013 launched a similar project named ‘Amma canteen’ which served food at highly-subsided rates.
