Northumberland County started first-of-its-kind fitness classes that combine aerobics with swimming. This offbeat fitness class is performed on top of giant floats resting on the swimming pool surface.

The ‘Float Fit’ classes are 30-minute sessions with high-intensity interval training where you wobble your way to fitness.

People of all age groups can perform these exercises while balancing on top of their ‘AquaBase’ float boards and going through their aerobics routine: from squats to pushups and burpees.

These unusual classes were introduced by Active Northumberland in the UK in order to encourage more people to take up swimming and fitness by making it fun for them.

The team at Active Northumberland is working hard to make swimming more accessible and appealing and encourage more people to take the plunge and feel the benefits – both physical and social – that swimming brings.

The people claimed that the exciting new classes offer a choice for local residents and focus on the idea of bringing the gym to the pool at the people’s own comfort.

The form of exercise not only makes you fitter but also reduces the stress on the joints, claimed Homer.

The beauty of these classes are they are all water-based so they are low impact and greatly reduce any stress on the joints. I’d encourage anyone who may be interested to give it a try at one of our free taster sessions.

(The Quint, in association with BitGiving, has launched a crowdfunding campaign for an 8-month-old who was raped in Delhi on 28 January 2018. The baby girl, who we will refer to as 'Chhutki', was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin when her parents were away. She has been discharged from AIIMS hospital after undergoing three surgeries, but needs more medical treatment in order to heal completely. Her parents hail from a low-income group and have stopped going to work so that they can take care of the baby. You can help cover Chhutki's medical expenses and secure her future. Every little bit counts. Click here to donate.)
