At least four persons died as fire ravaged a grocery store in Ahmedabad’s Naranpura on Tuesday, 9 January. The fire was doused minutes later, reported ANI.

The deceased are all members of a family who were reportedly living in the grocery store they owned, an Indian Express article said.

Speaking to the daily, fire department officials said that the blaze could have been caused by a ‘possible’ gas leak. With no escape route visible, the firefighters had to break open the shutter of the store to douse the flames. The mayor, Gautam Shah, visited the store to assess the situation.

The family is survived by a seven-year-old daughter, who left for school before the fire engulfed the shop. The department officials are currently investigating the cause of the fire.

This incident comes after a spate of fire accidents claimed lives around the country.

On 8 January, five employees of a bar and restaurant were charred to death in a fire mishap in Bengaluru. The fire broke out around 2:30 am in Kailash bar and restaurant, located in the ground floor of Kumbaara Sanga Building in KR Market area.

The Bengaluru mishap was preceded by a massive fire at Kamala Mills in Mumbai, that left 14 persons dead, and over 16 injured on 29 December. According to reports, the fire broke out at a pub in the compound, rapidly spreading to adjoining facilities and restaurants. The fire started after 12:30 am on the third floor of the building on Senapati Bapat Marg, a commercial hub of the city, a police official said.

The building, in Central Mumbai, houses some commercial establishments including hotels. The building also houses several media houses like Mirror Now, ET Now and Zoom.
