The Indian embassy in Cairo had originally denied Abd El Aty a visa as she was unable to travel to the country in person.

But she was granted permission after Dr. Lakdawala tweeted about her case to India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who intervened in her favour.

Abd El Aty was transported from Mumbai airport to the hospital in a makeshift bed that was placed in the back of a truck.

Once at the hospital, a crane was used to lift her the bed up to a window.
