Man accused of thrashing a doctor at a Dhule government hospital in north Maharashtra committed suicide in lock-up on Tuesday, informed the police.
Pradeep Vetal and eight others were arrested for beating up a doctor on Sunday.
A CCTV footage of the assault had gone viral.
The deceased’s relatives have refused to accept his body until a case is filed against the doctor who was beaten up for allegedly delaying treatment to a family member.
The doctor had apparently advised the relatives of the patient to shift the latter to another facility as the patient had been brought in with injury to his head and there was no neurosurgeon in the hospital. The doctor was allegedly beaten with rods by about 20 relatives of the patient. The doctor has suffered damage to vision in one eye and is admitted in the ICU for treatment of other injuries.
Vetal hanged himself in the toilet of police lock-up on Tuesday, Dhule superintendent of police S Chaitanya informed PTI.
Further probe was underway, he added.
Meanwhile, the protesting Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) wore black ribbons to work on Tuesday and also conducted candle light marches.
