A group of seven tourists have alleged that they were thrashed by a group of men after they protested about cattle being tortured in Odisha.
KV Kanan, a software engineer from Hyderabad, was sightseeing with his wife and five friends in Odisha’s Rayagada when they spotted a group of men beating a large herd of cows.
Around 200-300 cows were tied up in threes and around 20-25 men were beating them up, Kanan said. When the tourists tried to intervene, the men hurled abuses at them, beat up Kanan and manhandled the women, the tourists alleged.
The tourists also alleged that they called up the police but they were refused help. We called up the IIC, SP, ASP and the DM but no one came forward to help, one of the tourists said.
An FIR has been lodged at Chandili Police station and Kanan was admitted to a hospital. Guha Poonam Tapaskumar, DM Rayagada, has vowed to probe the matter. She has said that the matter has been brought to the notice of the society of prevention of cruelty to animals and has offered to bear the expenses of Kanan’s medical treatment.
