On December 1st, 2015, Chennai bore the brunt of the worst floods it had seen in over a hundred years. An entire month’s rainfall (490mm) beat down in a single day.

The situation was worsened by completely inadequate storm drains, capable of handling less than a tenth of the volume of rain that it received.
AND the systemic encroachment of marshlands across Velachery and Pallikkaranai.
AND the sudden opening of the Mettur dam, without prior warning to the residents of the city.
Chennai-ites love the sea. But the rains? Well, not since last year.

This is what the Chennai Marina looks like today, as cyclone NADA moves across it.
