Two days after he was found with his throat slit along the international border (IB) near Jammu, BSF head constable Narendra Kumar was cremated on Thursday, 20 September, in Haryana’s Sonipat.

Kumar had gone missing after an exchange of fire with Pakistan in Jammu's Ramgarh sector on 18 September, and was later found dead.

Speaking to ANI at the last rites ceremony, Kumar’s son lamented that ‘feeling proud’ would not solve his family’s problems – demanding that authorities take action.

It’s a matter of pride for us, not everyone gets to be draped in the tricolour. But we just can’t keep feeling proud. We are proud today, someone gets killed tomorrow, we will be proud again. We demand action from the authorities.

Stating that his father was the sole bread-winner of the family, Kumar’s son called for help from the authorities.

Now we’re proud but what happens after 2-3 days, when we don’t get any help? My brother and I are unemployed. Our sole bread-winner, my father, is gone while serving the nation. I want the authority to provide us whatever help we need.

Meanwhile, the “brutal” and "unprecedented" incident has prompted the security forces to issue a "high alert" across the IB and Line of Control (LoC) even as the Border Security Force has lodged a strong complaint with its counterpart from across the border – the Pakistan Rangers.
