Bill English officially took charge as New Zealand's new Prime Minister on Monday, a week after the surprise resignation of John Key.
English and deputy prime minister Paula Bennett were sworn in at a ceremony in Wellington presided over by Governor-General Patsy Reddy.
English ascended to the top job after he was nominated by the ruling National Party's caucus earlier on Monday.
He served as deputy prime minister and finance minister under Key's administration.
Key was a popular leader and was expected to contest a fourth straight election next year, after serving as prime minister for eight years.
But he said he wanted to leave while he was on top and spend more time with his wife and two children.
