Villagers in Odisha’s Jajpur district were in for a rude shock after they found a strange object rearing out of an agricultural field. Moving to have a closer look, they found a baby girl who had been buried alive in Shyamsundarpur village. The newborn, wrapped in a blue piece of fabric, was first rushed to a community health centre and later shifted to a government hospital where her condition is said to be stable.
Villagers suspect it to be a case of attempted female infanticide. The identity of her parents is still unclear.
"The baby was buried upside down. She was wrapped in a cloth. We found two small feet above the ground and believed that the baby was alive," said Alok Ranjan Rout, who rescued the infant.
