Parkour is becoming mainstream in Japan. The obstacle course-style routine, usually performed by running, jumping and bouncing off objects in urban public spaces, is attracting enthusiasts to Tokyo’s first training institute designed specifically for the sport.

Jun Sato opened ‘Sendai X Train’ in 2013. With the popularity of parkour increasing, his courses attracted more than 1,000 people last year.

Students practice their moves at the center then take their skills outside. Hitting one of Tokyo’s parks, Sato leads his crew on a frenetic routine, using a series of cement sculptures as the launch pad for their moves.

When the city is your gym, almost nothing is off-limits.
