One Japanese girl band is gaining attention for their efforts to combat prejudices against obesity. The group calls themselves Pottya – a slang for chubby. And while its four members are not seemingly overweight to Western eyes, they are all well above standard size in Japan.

Weighing an average of 168 pounds (76 kg), the girls are roughly 57 pounds (26 kg) heavier than average Japanese women their age.

The women hope to shine a light on, what they say is, their culture’s emphasis on being thin.

And it seems to be working. The group has released two albums and is making a mark in Japan’s music scene.
