November 14-20 is Transgender Awareness Week, an opportune time to share the stories of transgender, non-binary, and other gender-expansive individuals. The Quint is reposting this article from its archives which was initially published on April 15, 2015.

On 15th April, 2014 the Supreme Court granted India’s transexuals and transgenders the right to identify themselves as the “Third gender”. For decades they had been forced to use “ male” or “female” as their gender.

Several transgenders gathered at Jantar Mantar on Monday to celebrate the first anniversary of this landmark judgment. Representatives of the Transgender community spoke out to The Quint on their rights, their freedom of choice.
