Professors from Civil Engineering Department and Computer Science and Engineering Department of IIT Kharagpur are carrying out research on a device which will track school students as they travel in school buses and pull-carts.

Each student will have an Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) Identity card and the buses will have a GPS device which will track the bus and the students and upload the information to a back-end server through mobile internet.

So during this transit time the parents, the school authorities and the police will know the exact location along with date and time of the students. This information can be collected through an SMS or through an app which can be installed on the mobile phone.

Security concerns associated with school buses and pull carts are making parents choose private cars as a preferred mode of transportation for taking their children to schools. which has led to traffic congestions especially around schools.
Dr. Bhargab Maitra, IIT Kharagpur Professor

IIT Kharagpur along with Kolkata traffic police has initiated a project to enhance safety and security of school-going children using shared modes of transport, to ease the traffic congestion and other related problems.

The team is in talks with industrial partners for mass production of the technology to address the problem on a larger scale throughout India.
