A couple and their three children were on Monday burnt to death in a major fire that broke out in a shanty in North Delhi, the Delhi Fire Service said.

The incident took place at around 2:30 am in the Bhalswa Dairy area. Three fire tenders took around an hour to douse the fire that destroyed five hutments.

The victims were identified as Mohammed Kalam, 35, his wife Ravina, 32, and their children Salamat, 8, Miyamat, 6, and eight-month-old Asmat.

“The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. The accident may have been caused due to a cylinder explosion,” an official said.
