Sonita is a 16-year-old Afghani immigrant living in Iran whose family once tried to sell her into marriage. Today, she is an aspiring rapper who, through her music, is venting her anger against the oppression faced by girls.

The Quint caught up with Rokhsareh Ghaemmaghami, the Iranian director of Sonita, a documentary about the young rapper. We had a conversion with the filmmaker about topics ranging ranging from the idea behind the documentary to her age-old connect with India and Bollywood.
