On 28 September 2015, Mohammad Akhlaq was beaten to death by a mob in Dadri for allegedly consuming cow meat. The following piece from The Quint’s archives is being republished to mark his second death anniversary. The piece was originally published on 2 October 2015 – a few days after the tragic incident.
58-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq was woken up from his sleep on September 28 by an angry mob. They first went for his refrigerator, found some meat, abused him, and finally picked up some bricks from under his bed to smash his skull.
His 22- year-old son Danish was beaten unconscious.
This happened in Bisahara in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh. A well-connected village, only 60 kilometres from Delhi.
While Akhlaq’a daughter Shaista prays for the recovery of her brother Danish who is fighting for his life in a Noida hospital, her neighbour Garima prays for her brothers, who she says were wrongly accused in the attack. These two narratives from the these two sisters depict the current situation in the village after the brutal Dadri murder.
