A day after media reports claimed that the Arvind Kejriwal government is planning to buy snooping gadgets to add teeth to its Anti-Corruption Branch, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Saturday, took out protest marches outside CM Kejriwal’s house in Delhi.

New reports on Friday claimed that the Aam Aadmi Party government has prepared a note okaying purchase of surveillance equipment for the ACB to probe cases of corruption.

BJP’s Delhi unit chief Satish Upadhyay has accused the AAP of trying to break into people’s privacy.

AAP wants to break into people’s privacy. Who gave them the right to tap Delhi people’s phone calls?

— Satish Upadhyay, Delhi BJP chief

Taking on the AAP government over the report, Congress spokesman Tom Vadakkan said, “Delhi did not vote them for snooping and that too at our cost.”

We are totally shocked with available evidence and such proposals are not put up unless these have clearances from the top.

— Tom Vadakkan, as quoted in the Hindustan Times

Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi insisted such devices could be prone to misuse for carrying out political vendetta.

‘No Such Plans’

An aide of the Chief Minister, however, rubbished media reports and said there was no plan for any such purchase.

AAP’s Nagendar Sharma further hinted that rumours were being spread to show the Delhi government in poor light and defame the state’s anti-corruption wing.
