You’ve seen in-display fingerprint on phones already and now manufacturers are moving to the next big feature ie in-display front camera.

Chinese smartphone manufacturers Oppo and Xiaomi are reportedly working on an under-display camera technology as the company's Twitter handles on Monday posted a short video clip of what appears to be a notch-free prototype.

The 15-second video shows the top half of the phone which doesn't seem to have a notch or camera cut-out of any kind.

"At this stage, it's difficult for under-display cameras to match the same results as normal cameras, there's bound to be some loss in optical quality," wrote Shen from Oppo.

"But, no new technology jumps to perfection right away."

Both the brands have not revealed anything about the devices in their demo.

Most people can expect these early prototype versions to be showcased later this year or early next year at Consumer Electronics Show or Mobile World Congress in Las Vegas and Barcelona respectively.

Under-display cameras have been in testing for quite some time now by a wide range of smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung.

Speaking of Oppo, they have been busy working on new camera tech themselves, and they recently launched the Reno 10X Zoom in the country for Rs 39,999.

Experts believe that if under-display cameras become a thing, that will be a saving grace for the smartphone players, and letting them offer screen without any notch or a punch-hole camera design.

While notch was the preferred use of minimising the bezels on phones in 2018, this year we’ve seen most brands going with a punch-hole design, adopted by Samsung, with Apple and Google likely to follow suit later this year.

In all likelihood, 2020 could be the year when cameras go hiding underneath the display. We’re excited to see what this new tech will offer to the users.
