Remember Winamp, the music player that was part of everyone’s life in the late 90s when PCs were the fad? It’s going to make its comeback soon, and Windows 10 users will be the first to get it. Winamp was around when we didn’t have other media players like VLC, MX Player in the market.
Winamp was extremely popular for its user-friendly graphics, the flashy visualizations but failed to make the transition from PC to mobile. This forced them to shut shop in 2014 and its revival, yet again on a PC seems like a weird move in this day and age.
The apparent launch of Winamp was notified via a report, which shows leaked 'change logs' making it compatible with Microsoft's latest operating system. In addition to this, expect the player to be updated with support for latest audio codecs, and definitely change the way it looks.
Also, it is possible that the new-look Winamp is launched as a premium version, asking users to pay for its service. Not sure that’ll appeal to users when they have options like VLC Player now. Also, not having a mobile app feels like the folks are Microsoft are playing it a little too safe and not keeping up with the trend, something that lead to Winamp's demise a few years back.
We’re excited to see Winamp coming back, albeit in a modern avatar, but no official announcement regarding its launch has been made. Until then, we should take this news with a pinch of salt, but hope the media player re-enters our lives in a better form.
For now, you can still get hold of Winamp and its older versions that can run on your current operating system, but we advice against using them in the first place as they are buggy.
