Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp is now rolling out "Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode" for web users that will allow them to view videos within a chat window, without opening third party pages or apps.
The feature comes as part of the 0.3.2041 update along with new improvements and security fixes, WABetaInfo, a fan website that tracks WhatsApp, reported on Sunday.
In the previous mobile version, the messaging app released the PiP feature to watch shared videos.
WhatsApp on 3 October, had begun rolling out "Picture in Picture (PiP) mode" for viewing videos hosted on selected platforms, for all Android beta users running Android operating system (OS version 4.4 and above). The PiP feature was first rolled out in January for iOS users this year.
The feature lets users watch videos from YouTube, Facebook or Instagram on the chat screen itself. All other videos, shared natively from the messaging app, will open in full screen mode.
PiP is a special type of multi-window mode mostly used for video playback. It lets the user watch a video in a small window pinned to a corner of the screen while navigating between apps or browsing content on the main screen.
For web users, the PiP feature can be used to watch videos sourced through platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Streamable among others.
To force the update, WhatsApp web users need to clear their browser cache and re-launch the browser, the blog adds in the report.
Now, all we hope is that the dark mode for WhatsApp will be the next feature update to roll out for mobile users.
