Android is the most popular open source operating system in the world that has been customized to the hilt by the likes of Cyanogen, OnePlus, and Xiaomi among others. Phone makers in India have also tried their luck in the OS department but most of them are yet to live up to expectations.

However, it’s time for Indian brands to change that chequered history. A startup named CREO is looking to become the ‘Cyanogen of India’ by offering a customised version of Android for smartphones. The company’s coffers are up by $3 million in funding from Sequoia Capital, Beenext and India Quotient.

CREO, previously known as Mango Man, is the company that launched the TV-streaming stick called Tewee in India, a Google Chromecast alternative for buyers. In addition to building its own version of Android OS, CREO also plans to launch its first-ever smartphone of flagship quality that will give us a glimpse into the OS being created by them.

According to the company, the phone will run on the OS and will get monthly updates offering new features and options.

With funds from Sequoia Capital and couple of others, CREO will build its premium smartphone market in 2016 with its most ambitious product offering yet– an Android based Operating System which promises to deliver a new phone experience every month on its flagship smartphone.

CREO as per official statement

We do not have any information about the operating system or the phone in question but hopefully the startup will manage to handpick features that are popular among users and create a user-friendly ecosystem like many of its Android peers.
