Diwali’s usually the one time o’ the year when lights are at the top of our shopping lists. But with anyone who’s got a party lined up every weekend, that doesn’t have to be the case.

Cheap, Chinese LED lights are probably the first thing that’ll occur to you – but now there’s a product that replaces those stickers, gives you a fully-functional bulb, AND... that can be controlled with an app from your phone!

It’s called Reos Lite – an LED smart bulb that comes at Rs 1,699, which makes it 10 times cheaper than the Philips Hue lighting. But surely that can’t be right?

Pros:

  • High on lumens offer brightness
  • LED lights consume less power
  • Works in sync with app on Android and iOS
  • Product life of 7 years claimed
  • Value for money

Cons:

  • Brand awareness might be an issue for few

What’s Good?

This is their second iteration of the smart bulb but luckily, even after a slew of improvements, it costs less than the first. The higher lumen count delivers brighter light, devoid of the colour shades that one uses. The size of the bulb has also been increased to add a bigger unit inside.

But where the Reos Lite really earns its money, is the colour-changing mode. Pair the phone via Bluetooth, let the app access your phone’s GPS to locate the bulb in your room, and let the magic unfold.

You can switch between any colour available to you. You also have the option to try out different modes like; Strobe, Kaleidoscope, Party and Theatre. And they work, as advertised.

Features galore. (Photo: screen grab of the app)

Because the Lite is LED, you don’t run the risk of cranking up the size of your power bill. The company claims that the Lite’s life can stretch up to 7 years, but even if we get 3 years out of it, unscathed, we’d be more than happy.

What’s Bad?

There’s not much to condemn, but if you a really demanding creature, you’d argue that the Lite could work better in sync with the music played in the background. It’s better than the first version, but here’s hoping that future app upgrades make it even better.

Also, whenever I talked up the product to my friends, they had a hard time registering its brand value. We understand that it’s a start-up, which is why they seem to be relying more on word-of-mouth.

Good luck with that.

Why Buy It?

Ditch the Chinese LEDs, and just buy the Reos Lite for its sheer value, and the colour vibrance that you get, without affecting the environment, or amping up your power bill.

Here’s to your next (brighter) party!
