After getting over 130 million users on its network, looks like Reliance Jio is now setting its sights on a new set of users by offering desktop version of its Jio TV entertainment platform.
The Jio TV app on mobile (for Jio users) lets them access live TV broadcast, catering to channels like Sony TV, Zee TV, and even CNBC TV18. The desktop version is available at Jio.com.
This could also be an indication that Jio is set to push its suite of apps like Jio Cinema, Jio Music and Jio TV beyond its existing mobile user base. This way, Jio could garner more app downloads, and by diversifying into the desktop model, they can connect with people who don’t use smartphones.

This development could also mean that Reliance Jio is closing in on launching its Internet TV broadband services across the country. The telecom operator has been busy testing its network strength via pilot launches in select cities, but the rollout of Jio TV for desktop could have a bigger impetus.

Jio TV already works on television, aided by JioPhone, that connects to old and new generation TVs via VGA/HDMI port-enabled connectors.
It’s still hard to decipher why Jio would want to launch a desktop version of this platform, especially when most of the user growth is happening in the mobile space. Also, by confining the use of Jio TV web app to Jio users, the telecom operator might have missed the bus by not releasing it to non-Jio users.
