Netflix is clearly looking for alternatives to its current set of plans in markets like India. A few weeks ago reports said that the video streaming giant is allowing select users to try out its Rs 250 mobile-only monthly plan, but the company didn’t officially confirm its availability.
And now, on Friday, another report says that Netflix is also testing a series of weekly plans for mobile-only usage which starts from Rs 65.
This is according to a Hindustan Times report, which includes screenshots of the weekly plans that Netflix is likely to add to its pricing catalogue for countries like India.
Pricing has been a big issue for Netflix in the country, with its basic monthly plan starting from Rs 500 for SD quality and single device usage and this supposed sachet strategy does sound like an interesting move from the company.
As you can see below, these prices have showed up for some users in the country, so we’ll still take these plans with a pinch of salt, especially until Netflix officially confirms their availability.
The mobile-only weekly plans mentioned here, start from Rs 65 and goes as high as Rs 200, but the higher packs also offer more features. For instance, the Rs 65 plan only works on phone and tablet, but only one of these can be used.
The others; Rs 125 and Rs 165 are letting you watch Netflix on laptop/TV and access on multiple screens respectively.
A Netflix spokesperson told The Economic Times that they will be testing different options for select countries to allow users to watch content on their mobile device for a lower cost. Netflix had tested a similar subscription plan in Malaysia in November 2018. Chief Product Officer Greg Peters had earlier said they will be experimenting with their pricing to grow its user base in India.
With Amazon Prime Video and other video streaming platforms available for lot less, Netflix could really benefit from offering these short-term plans, allowing more users to try out the platform and its content.
