The India Mobile Congress 2018 was pegged to be a large-scale event where technology companies were keen to show their prowess in futuristic capabilities. The cornerstone of the three-day event was undoubtedly 5G connectivity, and a myriad of brands wanted to talk about its use case.
Reliance Jio, Airtel and equipment providers like Samsung, Intel and Ericsson among others had displayed products and services that are likely to push the proliferation of 5G in the country.
This is unlikely to happen in 2019, but experts believe that by 2021, the country will be ready at the ground level to come out with solutions that were unheard of few years back.
Reliance Jio’s 5G-centric stall had everything from smart home ecosystem, to enabling video calls via smartphone to a television.
The telco also displayed its much anticipated Jio GigaFiber router, which will power smart TV box, and a smart hub to let you control home activities remotely. They also wanted to highlight use of 5G to address the need to popularise content on virtual and augmented reality platform.
Then, you will also see parts of India, where everything will be monitored via cameras, with facial recognition powering the need to secure the country from dangerous activities.
But that’s not all, you also had a slew of Indian startups with products that were either focused on helping with the pollution or offering help for digital payment sans internet/network.
Smart connected cars and drone flying across the city is a far-fetched reality, at least for India but global companies like Intel and Huawei are looking at solutions that will help ease the issue of last mile connectivity in rural India.
We also met a startup incubating at the Indian Institute of Hyderabad, which has been granted over Rs 60 crore to focus on decongesting the network for telecom operators, opening up the channels for consistent output.
