“This is their information. They own it.”

“And you won’t sell it?”

“No! Of course now.”

Not our words, but this is what Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a 2009 interview with BBC. The interview is doing rounds on the internet, and one of the biggest influencers to share the clip is US National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden.

In the nine-year-old clip, Zuckerberg says: “The person who is putting the content on Facebook always owns the information.”

The statement comes as a major embarrassment for the 33-year-old billionaire considering the current crisis Facebook is going through after the Cambridge Analytica data breach scandal.

Zuckerberg recently broke his silence on the row and said that “Facebook doesn’t deserve to serve its people, if it cannot protect their data.”

Earlier in the day, the Silicon Valley-based tech giant also announced a series of changes to give users more control over their data, after the data scandal which has wiped more than $100 billion from its stock market value.
