Looks like the upcoming OnePlus phone will have a notch, and it makes sense to have it in the scheme of things. This is what Carl Pei, co-founder, OnePlus has spoken about in a recent interview, confirming the iPhone X design imprint is spreading to other brands pretty swiftly.
Defending the use of notch, Carl says the decision is all about offering more screen real estate to users. The use of notch has been a hot topic recently, but most tech enthusiasts are not sure of its relevance. However, Carl seems to agree with the direction taken by Apple, hence, the next OnePlus is guaranteed to have the notch on the front.
Having said that, Carl believes that notch will never offer its value in terms of design aesthetics. So, clearly, OnePlus and others have resorted to the use of notch to increase the screen space.
Carl was also insistent that unlike other phone makers, the use of notch on the upcoming OnePlus phone has been well thought of. He also highlighted the use of a smaller notch in comparison to the Apple iPhone X. This has become possible because OnePlus won’t be integrating high-end feature like Face ID to its front module.
Further detailing his point about using notch with care, Carl confirms that over 1,000 apps from the Google Play Store were tested. This has given them a clearer idea about which of the apps would require a compatibility mode.
The pertinent issue with notch on the iPhone X has showed up while browsing photos or watching video. OnePlus has made note of how that can ruin the UX of the device, and will look to prevent that from its upcoming phone.
The software-side of the phone will be tailored to support gesture features, something that we’ve seen on the BlackBerry 10 OS as well as the iPhone X in 2017. The phone still doesn’t have a name, but the company’s defense of notch design points us to an earlier-than-expected launch timeframe of the device.
Oh, and yes, initial leaks of the OnePlus phone pretty much confirm that the audio jack, ditched by many off-late, will be around. As for the other rumoured features are concerned, the phone should come with Snapdragon 845, 6 and 8GB RAM options, with storage up to 128GB and dual rear cameras with low-light shooting support.
