HMD Global, the makers of Nokia smartphones running on Android, have just unveiled not one, not two, but five new Nokia phones at the Mobile World Congress 2018 on Sunday.
The phones; Nokia 8110, Nokia 1, Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 7+ and Nokia 8 Sirocco will be making their way to global markets starting from April this year. And just like the Nokia 3310 from last year’s event in Barcelona, HMD Global had yet another iconic Nokia phone revived in the from of Nokia 8110, which is a 4G-enabled phone that supports Google apps now.
In addition to that, HMD Global also talked up its partnership with Google for Android One project, offering its Nokia 3 and later smartphones to the cause.
HMD Global also became the first brand to officially show Android Oreo Go smartphone, Nokia 1. This phone, as advertised by Google over the past few months, will be able to run all Android apps on low-end hardware. The phone will retain at $85 (Rs 5,500 approx), as confirmed by Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product, Officer, HMD Global, and launching early April as well.
It was intriguing to see Sarvikas point to the fact that there are over 1.3 billion users of feature phone across the globe. But the pricing of the Nokia 1 doesn’t seem to reflect what Google had promised with its sub $50 pricing.
Thee Nokia 8110 4G was definitely the pick of the bunch, with its slider design, and a Banana-yellow shade on offer that runs on operating system version made by KaiOS, who also are behind the smartness of JioPhone.
This phone supports the latest in connectivity, gets Wi-Fi hotspot too, and run Google Assistant, Facebook and Twitter among host of Android apps. This one gets a price tag of 79 Euros (Rs 6,200 approx)
Next up, HMD Global showed its improved Nokia 6 smartphone, that gets a single Zeiss optics camera unit now, and supports fast charging with Snapdragon 630 processor in tow.
That was followed up with the last two products from the event, Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco. These are the first Nokia phones from the brand to come with bezel-less 18:9 ratio curved screen, Both these phones pack the same set of dual cameras at the back, optimised by Zeiss optics. Nokia 7 Plus gets Snapdragon 660 processor with 4GB of RAM and 128GB on-board storage to everyone’s liking.
(The Quint, in association with BitGiving, has launched a crowdfunding campaign for an 8-month-old who was raped in Delhi on 28 January 2018. The baby girl, who we will refer to as 'Chhutki', was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin when her parents were away. She has been discharged from AIIMS hospital after undergoing three surgeries, but needs more medical treatment in order to heal completely. Her parents hail from a low-income group and have stopped going to work so that they can take care of the baby. You can help cover Chhutki's medical expenses and secure her future. Every little bit counts. Click here to donate.)
