Ducati To Recall Some Supersport Bikes Globally To Fix Fire Hazard

There are 1,462 bikes affected in USA, but Ducati India did not reveal the number of motorcycles affected here.

Ducati is recalling 1,462 units of the Supersport and the Supersport S motorcycles in the US, acting on reports filed with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on 5 June. Now, Ducati India is also saying that a number of these bikes sold in India may be affected as well according to a report by Autocar India.

“The recall campaign has just been announced and we have recorded a few VINs that have been affected in India. We are in the process of letting MoRTH and SIAM know of the recall. There will soon there be an official announcement from Ducati India,” Autocar quoted Ducati India as saying.

However, Ducati has not revealed how many Supersport and Supersport S motorcycles affected by the recall in India. An official statement from Ducati is awaited. 

The recall comes after reports of three such models catching fire spontaneously in USA. The cause has been attributed to certain hoses that are routed too close to the exhaust manifold, causing them to melt.

The fuel tank overfill hose and the airbox blow-by hose are the ones affected. The melting of either can cause highly flammable fluid to come in contact with the hot exhaust manifold.

NHTSA, according to Autocar has warned the owners to look for signs like smoke at idle or the smell of burning rubber from the lower fairing.

The fix to this problem is a rather simple one, which involves re-routing the hoses to ensure they do not come in contact with the exhaust manifold.
