The upcoming MG Hector, the first SUV for India from MG Motor, has been spotted during the filming of an ad for the vehicle in London. As we had always suspected, the MG Hector is built using the Baojun 530 body.
SAIC, the parent company of MG Motor, also owns Wuling which runs the Baojun brand. This gives MG free access to a whole host of cars and SUVs from its parent company’s portfolio.
The company has been running road shows around the country showing off some of its other products like the MG HS and ZS SUVs, but these are not coming to India anytime soon.
The MG Hector was reportedly spotted with actor Benedict Cumberbatch behind the wheel during the filming of the ad.
The MG Hector will likely launch in June this year and it will go up against the likes of the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson and Mahindra Alturas. The company has also announced its second SUV for the Indian market that will be an all-electric one that could do over 250 Km on a single charge. The company also says it will feature over-the-air (OTA) software updates for its electric range of vehicles, sort of like Tesla does.
The Hector, though, will come with BS-VI ready 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and 2-litre diesel engine choices. It will feature nearly 75 percent local content at launch. It is being made at the company’s plant in Halol, Gujarat.
