Mercedes Benz’s S Class lineup has been its pinnacle of automotive luxury. On 18 June, Mercedes launched the performance version of the S Class – the S 63 AMG for Indian customers at a price of Rs 2.55 Crore (ex-showroom India).
Michael Jopp, marketing head for Mercedes Benz India, unveiled the S 63 AMG to the media in Delhi. This car is all about luxury and performance.
The most prominent change on the S 63 AMG is the front grille. This version has borrowed from the more track-focused AMG GT R. This grille replaces the older chrome strip the ran through the Mercedes three-pointed star emblem. Mercedes is calling it the ‘Panamericana’ grille.
Mercedes uses an intelligent lighting system on the headlights that adapt to your surroundings –which means that it will turn the bulbs depending on your steering input and will adjust its brightness also depending on the driving conditions.
The engine is a 4.0 litre (4,000 cc) Bi-turbo V8 that churns out around 610 bhp of power and gives out a massive 900 nm of torque. The S 63 AMG goes from 0-100 in 3.5 seconds and the top speed has been electronically limited to 300 kmph. It comes with a 9-speed G Tronic dual-clutch transmission with torque converter. Mercedes claims that this reduces the shift time compared to the earlier car.
To make the car more exclusive and to ensure unique detailing, Mercedes has used the one man-one engine policy on the S 63 AMG. This means that every engine is one-off and made by a single person whose name badge sits right in front of the engine cover.
This car also has, like every other car in this segment, an adjustable air suspension that uses hydraulic variable damper control to either increase the ride height by up to 30 mm or reduce it by 20 mm, as per your requirement.
Coming to one of the most intriguing parts of the car – its taillights. The tail lights have a fascinating design element. They use OLED technology with 66 ultra thin LED panels for a unique look. I was hesitant to say it, but this is one of the best tail lights on any car in the market right now.
Inside, the car screams luxury. It comes with Mercedes’ LCD instrument panel that divides into two screens – one infotainment system with Mercedes’ Command system integrated and the other screen acts as the instrument cluster. As expected, it houses a head up display as well. The infotainment lets you control practically everything on the car, from your music and climate control to even the suspension setup.
Surprisingly, the cabin is quite practical as well. It has a lot of pockets and spaces for you to store your stuff and comes with a wireless charging dock for your phone which supports phones of up to 6-inch screen size.
The seats on the car are trimmed in alcantara leather with heating and ventilating options, massager and all the quirks you expect from this segment. Although the S 63 AMG is a two-door coupe, you get two rear passenger seats, which aren’t spacious.
Being launched at Rs 2.55 crore, the S 63 AMG will take on the new Bentley Continental GT, Rolls Royce Wraith and the upcoming BMW M8 as direct competitors.
