Officially in the final fortnight of the 2019 ICC World Cup and in India’s penultimate match of the group stage they’re playing Bangladesh today at Edgbaston.
A victory today will ensure Virat Kohli’s team a spot in the semi-finals. Currently placed second in the standings, India has 11 points from seven games after being handed their first defeat of the tournament by England on Sunday.
However, if Bangladesh come out on top, they can move level with fifth-place Pakistan on nine points — one point behind fourth-place England. A defeat will end their semi-final hopes.
Bangladesh and Pakistan meet in their last group game at Lord's on Friday. India's final group match is against Sri Lanka at Headingley on Saturday.
India has won the last four ODIs against Bangladesh.
The teams have played each other three times at the World Cup so far with Bangladesh winning in 2007 followed by victories for India in 2011 and 2015.
Bangladesh and India have met once before in an ODI at Edgbaston when India won by nine wickets in the 2017 Champions Trophy with big scores from Rohit Sharma and Kohli.
On the eve of the match, Bangladesh’s skipper Mashrafe Mortaza came for the pre-match press conference and said his brief to the players is to stay calm amidst hype surrounding the India clash which will decide his team's fate in the World Cup.
"It is very important to stay cool. Hype is such that it becomes difficult for each player to stay calm. It is important to do the things we do on the field properly. Initially nerves play a role and it's important to control nerves in the beginning. It is better to stay away from outside pressures," said the skipper.
Virat Kohli has won the toss and elected bat first in Birmingham against Bangladesh.
Two changes to their playing XI. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Dinesh Karthik are playing and Kuldeep Yadav & Kedar Jadhav make way for them.
Bangladesh too make two changes. Rubel Hossain comes in for Mehidy Hasan and Mahmudullah hasnt passed the fitness test and Sabbir Rahman is taking his spot.
India: KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli (c), Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah.
Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Liton Das, Mosaddek Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mashrafe Mortaza (c), Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman.
Lots of talk about maybe asking Rishabh Pant to open but once again it’s Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul walking out to start the Indian innings.
Virat Kohli mentioned the short boundary at the toss (as he did after the game against England) and Rohit Sharma makes use of it in the first over itself as he hits Mashrafe Mortaza for a maximum off the fifth ball.
India 10/1 after 1 over
Mohammad Saifuddin, Mustafizur Rahman and Mustafizur ‘The Fizz’ Rahman utilising the new ball and after that big opening over, India’s picked up just a run and then 3 from the second and third overs.
Saifuddin is hit for a boundary by Rahul in the fourth over though to break the monotony.
India 18/0 after 4 overs
Is Rohit Sharma the most ‘dropped’ cricketer at this World Cup or what? Drop as in a catch dropped, as in once again, as in in today’s match as well.
Dropped early in his innings against England on Sunday, Rohit’s been given a lifeline on 9 off Mustafizur Rahman’s delivery. The culprit this time is Tamim Iqbal and there really is no excuse as it was a borderline sitter.
India 21/0 after 5 overs
Rohit Sharma’s on 23 and KL Rahul’s on 11 as India already have more on the board than they did against England after 10 over.
36/0 but more importantly, Rohit Sharma is back. Not the one who made the hesitant start against England but the one who’s dealing in fours and sixes with ease.
India 36/0 after 7 overs
Rohit Sharma hits the second ball of the over for a boundary and at 57/0 India have their highest powerplay score of the World Cup so far. This, after their 28/0 on Sunday was their lowest of the tournament.
India 59/1 after 9 overs
Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza returns to bowl the 10th over after he bowled the first and conceded 10.
Not different treatment from Rohit and Rahul now either though as they both hit him for a boundary each. 10 runs from the over.
India 69/0 after 10 overs
Mashrafe Mortaza introducer Shakib’s spin to the attack and Bangladesh finally see a few quiet overs from India. Mortaza bowls one in between the two Shakib overs and the three collectively concede 5 runs.
India 74/0 after 13 overs
Rohit Sharma gets a quick single off Shakib Al Hasan and with that bring up his 5th half-century of this World Cup.
KL Rahul is on 32.
India 87/0 after 15 overs
Most overs reaping 9s and 10s for India but Bangladesh bring on Shakib Al Hasan and once again things slow down. Just the 2 runs from the 17th over as KL Rahul now nears his half century, at 42.
India 99/0 after 17 overs
KL Rahul brings up his half-century off the 19th over bowled by Rusel Hossain. Starts with a boundary off the first ball and takes a double off the second ball to get to his milestone. A four to end the over as well as India make 12 off it.
Rahul’s second fifty of this World Cup.
India 117/0 after 19 overs
Just the 4 runs off the 21st over bowled by Rubel Hossain as he pulls it back a bit.
India 126/0 after 21 overs
The opener has switched gears and how! Mosaddek Hossain is hit of a six and a four in the 22nd over, Rubel Hossain goes for a boundary in the next and Rohit’s now officially become the highest-scorer of this World Cup.
81 runs off 70 balls so far from Rohit’s bat.
India 147/0 after 23 overs
He’s gone for some runs in the match but Rubel Hossain bowls the 25th over and concedes just 4. Soumya Sarkar bowls the 26th and India manage just two off it.
Good time to point out that Rohit’s nearing his century?
India 164/0 after 26 overs (Rohit on 93, Rahul on 67)
The run rate had fallen from 6.68 to 6.17 in the last 4 overs and it was pretty much this moment that everyone was waiting for.
Rohit Sharma has scores his fourth century of this World Cup! What a star!
He scored 122* against South Africa, 140 against Pakistan, and 102 on Sunday against England. The only other batsman to hit four centuries in a World Cup is Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara in 2015.
He was dropped on 9 and Rohit Sharma went onto score a century.
But Bangladesh weren't going to make the same mistake again.
Two deliveries after he celebrated the landmark, the Indian opener is walking back to the pavilion. Pitted against Soumya Sarkar, he was caught by Liton Das after a mis-hit drive on 104.
India 181/1 after 30 overs
Silver lining? Virat Kohli is coming out to bat and gives his deputy a hug on his way in.
3 overs after Rohit Sharma was packed off, KL Rahul too is walking back to the pavilion, on 77.
Rubel Hossain has gone for runs in the match but he’s managed to get an important wicket for Bangladesh as Rahul is caught behind by Mushfiqur Rahim.
India 195/2 in 32.4 overs as the teams break for Drinks
India have a substantial amount on the board and that means Rishabh Pant gets a shot at the number four slot once again. He faces 9 straight deliveries after coming out to bat and hits one of them for a six.
India 204/2 after 34 overs
4 overs together and the Virat-Pant partnership has made 22 runs so far. Virat’s hit two boundaries and there’s been the one maximum from Pant so far.
India 217/2 after 36 overs
Shakib’s taken for 10 in the 37th over courtesy two boundaries but the 38th over sees Kohli and Pant get the scoreboard ticking with a lot of running between wickets. Another 10 runs from this one bowled by Soumya Sarkar as the run rate has risen to 6.23.
India 237/2 after 38 overs
Second ball of the 39th over and Virat Kohli perishes looking for a big one. He’s caught near the boundary line off Mustafizur by Tamim Iqbal and Bangladesh have the big wicket.
Virat’s out on 26. That fifth straight World Cup half century is not to be.
India 237/3 after 38.2 overs
2 balls after he replaces his skipper out in the middle, Hardik Pandya is given the marching orders by Mustafizur Rahman- caught at first slip by Soumya Sarkar on a duck.
MS Dhoni is the new man in, not Dinesh Karthik.
India 237/4 after 38.4 overs.
A wicket maiden in the previous over but Rishabh Pant is writing his own rules here.
No tame shots as Mohammad Saifuddin is hit for three straight boundaries and India make 14 off the over.
India 251/4 after 40 overs
Rishabh Pant clearly has been sent with a clear brief - score runs. MS Dhoni is rotating the strike and has faced just 10 balls in the last 4 overs.
Pant, in fact, is nearing his half-century as he bats on 47 (36).
India 268/4 after 43 overs
‘Go big or go home’ seemed like his mantra and Rishabh Pant has gone ‘home’ going for a big one. Shakib Al Hasan is the bowler and after his many tight spells, the all-rounder is rewarded with a wicket.
Mosaddek Hossain though manages to almost drop Pant, latching onto the ball after a little fumble.
India 279/5 after 45 overs
‘The Fizz’ has the ball for the 46th over and Dhoni starts it with a boundary. Dinesh Karthik too takes strike but just a few singles as India make 9 runs from the fifth-last over.
India 288/5 after 46 overs
Dinesh Kartik hit his first boundary in the 47th over but the new addition to the team has fallen on 8.
He’s playing the match in Kedar Jadhav’s place who has been criticised much for his slow innings (ref: Sachin Tendulkar), but an 8 off 9 isn't going to help DK’s case much when India pick the squad for the Sri Lanka game on Saturday now.
India 298/6 in 47.2 overs
MS Dhoni’s hit a couple of boundaries in the penultimate over bowled by Mohammad Saifuddin as 11 runs come off it.
India 311/6 after 49 overs
Tried to avoid this word but MS Dhoni’s gotten out trying to go for a big one, showing some ‘intent’.
Some credit to Mustafizur Rahman as well. Bowls two dots to start the over and Dhoni has little choice but to swing the bat. Caught by Shakib al Hasan on 35.
India 311/7 in 49.3 overs
Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami fall off the last 2 deliveries of the final over of the Indian innings.
That’s 3 wickets in fact in the 50th over for Mustafizur Rahman.
India post 314/9.
Sorry about the pause in updates. But we’re back now!
Soumya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal opened for Bangladesh, and have posted 34/0 in 8 overs.
ICYMI, Bangladesh are chasing India’s 314/9.
After 9.3 overs, Shami gives India that much-needed breakthrough!
Tamim is bowled for 22 off 31 balls. Shakib Al Hasan replaces him.
Bangladesh 39/1 in 9.3 overs
It seems like MS Dhoni has handed over the wicketkeeping gloves to Rishabh Pant. Doesn’t seem to be on the field anymore.
Mohd Shami bowls to Soumya, and the Indians are appealing for lbw. The umpire says no, and Virat Kohli takes the review just at the last second.
Aaaand, India lose the review. The umpires say there’s no inside edge. Kohli is not happy because the umpires decided against going for the ball tracking.
The ball tracker however later shows that it would have been umpire’s call. So not a wrong call. But the Men in Blue have lost their only review of the innings.
Bangladesh 51/1 in 11.2 overs
MS Dhoni is seen putting on his gloves in the dressing room balcony. Phew, just a short break. But India did lose their review in his absence. He’s back.
15 overs gone, and Bangladesh are at 73/1.
The review lost, and danger-man Shakib at the crease. India do need a wicket... or a few just about now.
And just as I said Kohli needs a wicket, he takes a catch to remove Soumya off a delivery by Hardik Pandya!
The opener hits the short ball straight to cover, and into the hands of Kohli.
Bangladesh 74/2 in 15.1 overs
Pandya goes for 9 runs in the 18th over. Shakib hits a beautiful boundary on the fourth delivery of the over. He’s definitely getting into the grove.
Bangladesh 88/2 in 18 overs
Shakib Al Hasan (38) and Mushfiqur Rahman (20) are set at the crease, and have added 42 runs for the third wicket.
Bangladesh have posted 116/2 in 22 overs, still need 199 runs off 168 balls
India get a much-needed wicket! Shami takes a catch at midwicket to remove Mushfiqur for 24 (off 23 balls).
The 47-run partnership comes to an end. And Liton Das joins Shakib at the crease.
Bangladesh 121/3 in 23 overs, need 194 runs from 162 balls
Stunning piece of fielding from KL Rahul at the boundary to save a four on the fifth delivery of the 26th over off Shami. 6 runs added in that over. Shakib is nearing a half-century.
Bangladesh 133/3 in 26 overs
Shakib slams the ball towards deep midwicket, asks for a double, but Liton Das is hesitant. Shakib rushes back to the crease.
In the meanwhile, Chahal throws the ball from deep mid-wicket and Dhoni hits the stumps. Third umpire confirms Shakib was in.
Shakib hits a delivery off Pandya to deep point, and the batsmen take a quick double to bring up Shakib Al Hasan's half-century. He’s really been brilliant at this World Cup.
Bangladesh 147/3 in 28 overs, need 168 runs from 22 overs
Big wicket!
After smashing the first six of Bangladesh’s innings, Liton is caught out by Dinesh Karthik off a delivery by Hardik Pandya!
Pandya’s second wicket today, and an important one that too. Liton walks back to the hut for 22 (off 24 balls).
Bangladesh 162/4 in 29.4 overs, need 153 runs from 118 balls
Bowled him! Jasprit Bumrah cleans up Mosaddek for 3 (off 7 balls). Bangladesh lose their second wicket in 17 balls but the danger-man Shakib is still at the crease, batting at 65.
Bangladesh 173/5 in 32.2, need 142 runs in 106 balls
Biggg relief for the India camp. Shakib Al Hasan gets caught out by Karthik off a delivery by Pandya, walks back to hut for 66 (off 74 balls).
And that’s a third wicket for Pandya!
Bangladesh 179/6 in 33.5 overs, need 136 runs in 97 balls
Oops! Jasprit Bumrah twists his right foot while trying to save a boundary and lands on his left shoulder. The physio runs to him and he’s going off the field. Scary scenes. Very, very, VERY scary scenes.
Jadeja comes onto the filed as a replacement.
Expense over there by Shami. He leaks 17 runs in the 38th over as Sabbir Rahman smashes back-to-back fours on the first two balls. Saifuddin then slams two more on the fifth and sixth.
BUT, Bumrah is back on the field after getting checked. He had earlier fallen oddly while fielding. Happy days.
Bangladesh 208/6 in 38 overs, need 107 runs from 72 balls
Just 10 overs to go in the game, and Bangladesh are not looking so bad. Sabbir (30*) and Saifuddin (19*) have stitched a 46-run stand so far, and now need 90 runs remaining in the last 60 balls with four wickets in hand.
Remember, if India win they enter the semifinals and if Bangladesh lose they exit the playoffs race.
Bangladesh 225/6 in 40 overs
Shami leaks another 11 runs in the 42nd over. Sabir and Saiffudin are looking good with a 61-run stand so far.
Shami on the other hand has been expensive today – 61 runs in 8 overs with 1 wicket.
Bangladesh 240/6 in 42 overs, need 75 runs from 48 balls
Beauty from Jasprit Bumrah! Virat Kohli turns to his go-to man, and he delivers... on the first ball of the over! Sabbir gets stumped by the slower ball, and has been dismissed for 36, ending his 66-run stand with Saiffudin.
Bangladesh’s required run-rate is climbing and they now have just 3 wickets in hand.
Bangladesh 245/7 in 43.1 overs, need 70 runs from 41 balls
Bangladesh lose their 8th wicket as Mashrafe Mortaza is caught behind the stumps by MS Dhoni off a ball by Bhuvi. First wicket for Bhuvi today, after giving away 44 runs in 8.2 overs.
India just two wickets away from that semifinal spot now.
Bangladesh 251/8, need 58 runs from 34 balls
The match is drawing to a close, and India are in full control. Rubel Hossain smashes a stunning four on the third ball, and Bangladesh get 8 runs off the 46th over by Bumrah.
Bangladesh 272/8, need 43 runs from 24 balls
Shami leaks 7 runs in the 47th over, and that takes his count to 68 runs in 9 overs.
India definitely have the upper hand in the game, but honestly, anything is possible. 36 runs in 18 balls is not impossible!
Bangladesh 279/8, need 36 runs from 18 balls
What a ball by Bumrah! The pacer cleans up Rubel Hossain for 9, with India now needing just 1 more wicket to seal a semifinals spot.
Bangladesh need 29 runs from 13 balls
Bumrah bowls Mustafizur Rahman for a first ball duck, that’s two wickets in two balls for the star pacer.
With that, Bangladesh are all out for 286 in 48 overs and also out of the playoffs race. India win by 28 runs and join defending champions Australia in the semifinals.
It’s been an impressive show by the Indian bowlers against a strong Bangladesh batting line-up.
Jasprit Bumrah 4/55 in 10 overs
Hardik Pandya 3/60 in 10 overs
Shami 1/68 in 9 overs
Chahal 1/50 in 10 overs
Bhuvi 1/55 in 9 overs
A good show by the Indian bowlers, but Player of the Match is Indian opener Rohit Sharma for his 92-ball 104 that helped India post 314/9 in their 50 overs.
On getting dropped earlier in the innings, Rohit said, “I was lucky. Fortune favours the brave.
On his four tons in the World Cup so far: “My mantra is whatever has happened in the past, keep it in the past. It is a new day, present day and I don’t try to think what has happened. That is very critical from a team’s point of view, the guys who are batting well should carry on and get the team to a good total. What has happened today has happened, I need to focus on the next game now”.
On beating Bangladesh: "Bangladesh have played some really good cricket in this tournament. Deserve a lot of credit for the fight they put up. Even till the last wicket they were in the game with their intent so we had to work hard for the win. But very happy to see that 'Q' (qualified) in front of the team’s name on the table now.”
On Fielding 5 Bowlers: ”We experienced that Hardik when put under pressure has come back really well. He's really looking forward to do stuff for the team. He has a gut feel of what the batsman is looking to do. I know five bowlers was a gamble, but it was keeping in mind the ground dimensions. We wanted to play the perfect combination for the small boundary.”
On Rohit Sharma’s Ton: "He's the best One-day player around and we are so delighted to see him. When he plays like that, everybody is happy to see him strike this so well.”
On Bumrah’s Spell: “His overs were always going to be crucial, so that's why we stopped him after four initially. He's a world-class bowler and he just knows what he's up against. We can look to capitalise on situations where we are in a position to score those extra 30 runs.”
India have won a good game to seal their semifinals spot, and Bangladesh have gone down fighting.
Both teams now have one group stage game each remaining. India play Sri Lanka on 6 July while Bangladesh end their campaign with a match against Pakistan.
