David Warner scored his second century of the World Cup as Australia defeated Bangladesh by 48 runs at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Thursday, 20 June.

Electing to bat first, Australia piled on a mammoth 381/5 in their 50 overs, courtesy a 147-ball 166 from David Warner. Meanwhile, during their chase Bangladesh could only manage 333 for the loss of 8 wickets with Mushfiqur Rahim remaining unbeaten on 102, his first World Cup century.

With this win, Australia go to the top of the points table with 10 points from 5 wins in 6 matches. Meanwhile, Bangladesh continue to occupy the fifth spot despite the loss. They are on 5 points from 6 matches with two wins, three losses. They shared one point with Sri Lanka after their match was abandoned due to rain.

Bangladesh Still Hopeful of a Top 4 Finish

For Bangladesh, defeat means they now have to win their last three matches against Afghanistan, mighty India, and Pakistan to make it to their first World Cup semi-finals. But that won’t be enough to decide their fate in the competition as the outcomes of matches involving other teams will also have a role to play in Bangladesh’s progression in the competition.

As far as Australia are concerned, they go to Lord's on Tuesday to face top-ranked England with less headache. Since losing to India, Australia have won three straight group matches, and posted four consecutive 300-plus scores. But they still need to win at least two of their rest three matches to make sure that they finish in the top four.
