The International Cricket Council (ICC) has released its own ‘Team of the Tournament’, a day after England pipped New Zealand to lift its maiden World Cup.
England beat New Zealand on Sunday, 14 July, by virtue of having scored more boundaries after the game was tied in the first 100 overs, with both teams scoring 241. Both teams scored the same number of runs in the Super Over as well (15).
ICC’s World Cup XI is a power-packed one with class players making it to the line-up.
Rohit Sharma and Jason Roy form the opening pair. While Rohit finished as the top-scorer in this World Cup (648), with a record-breaking five centuries to his name, Roy finished with 443 and one century.
Kane Williamson, Joe Root, Shakib Al Hasan and Ben Stokes make up ICC’s middle order. Williamson has also been selected to lead the team by ICC. Having scored 578 runs, he was also named player of the tournament in this World Cup.
Alex Carey is the designated wicketkeeper-batsman, batting at number seven. The left-handed batter played some useful knocks for Australia down the order and affected some crucial dismissals as well. With 375 runs, including three fifties, in his kitty, Carey had a good World Cup.
Ferguson finished second on the list with 21 wickets. Archer (20) third, and Bumrah (18) fifth.
Kiwi pace spearhead Trent Boult, with 17 wickets, is ICC’s twelfth man in their line-up.
