The ICC World Cup match between South Africa and Sri Lanka was interrupted on Friday, 28 June. And no, it wasn’t due to the rain!

In fact, it was a swarm bees that invaded the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, forcing cricketers from both teams and the on-field umpires to lay flat on the ground.

Chris Morris was bowling the 48th over, and his ninth, Suranga Lakmal was on strike when the bees descended upon the ground after the fifth ball was bowled.

Interestingly, this isn’t even the first time that a match between the two countries has been stopped due to a bee invasion. Back in April 2017, a ‘Pink Day’ ODI between the two teams had been halted at the Wanderers in Johannesburg because of the same reason!

Luckily no one was stung by the insects, but the incident did draw laughter from the crowd and people on social media.
