Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is set to be the next BCCI president after emerging as the consensus candidate in a meeting late on Sunday, 13 October, night.
Many people, including his former teammates and others from the cricketing fraternity, congratulated him on Twitter and wished him luck for his new innings.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, 14 October, also congratulated Sourav Ganguly for being elected as the BCCI president.
Mamata in her tweet said that Ganguly has made India and Bangla proud.
Ganguly will be the second Indian captain to be elected as a full time BCCI president. The first Indian captain was Maharajkumar who lead the Indian team in 3 Test matches in 1936 and became the BCCI president in 1954.
The new BCCI president-elect Ganguly said "it's a great opportunity for him to do something good" as he is taking over the reigns of the board at a time when it's image has got a serious beating. Ganguly pipped Brijesh Patel in a see-saw battle and is expected to be the only presidential nominee.
"Obviously, it's a great feeling as I have played for the country and captained the country.
"And I am taking over at a time when BCCI has not been in greatest of position for the last three years. Its image has got hampered quite a lot. It's a great opportunity for me to do something good," said the former India captain, who will have to demit office in July, due to compulsory cooling off period.
