Bindra Finishes Fourth

The Beijing Olympics’ gold medalist has to settle for the fourth spot in the men’s 10m air rifle final after losing the shoot-off for the bronze medal with Ukraine’s S Kulish.

Ukraina’s Oleh Tsarkov gets eliminated first in the 8-man final. His score was 79.7

New Format for 10m Air Rifle

For the first time in the history of the Olympics, the final of the 10m air rifle will be contested as a 20-shot shoot out.

  • The final begins with the eight shooters firing six shots – three rounds of two shots each.
  • The next stage of the final is single shot rounds. After shot no 7 and 8, the shooter with the lowest aggregate score is eliminated from the final line-up and placed eighth.
  • The elimination of the lowest-scoring shooter will take place successively after two shots. The medallists will be identified at the end of the 16th shot.
  • There will only be two shooters left for the 19th and the 20th shot, which will decide the gold and silver medallist.

2008 Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra secured a qualification for the finals of 10m Air Pistol on Monday. India’s flag bearer made the cut with 625.7 points and secured 7th rank.

Bindra secured his nomination with scores of 104.3, 104.4, 105.9, 103. 8, 102.1 and 105.2. The shooter was in a spot of bother after faring poorly in series 4 and series 5 but, the shooter managed to keep his calm for the final series and secured the qualification.

10m air rifle shooting is the only event in which the five time Olympian will represent India.
