Former world number one and four-time Major champion Rory McIlroy has become the latest big ticket golfer to pull out of the Rio Olympics due to fears of the Zika virus.

The Irishman joins a long list of golfers who have chosen to give the games a miss citing health concerns because of the mosquito-borne virus which is linked to severe birth defects and possible neurological problems in adults. Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Vijay Singh have all also chosen to not compete in Rio.

After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realize that my health and my family’s health comes before anything else. Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take. I trust the Irish people will understand my decision. The unwavering support I receive every time I compete in a golf tournament at home or abroad means the world to me.
Rory McIlroy’s official statement

The Olympic Committee of Ireland (OCI) said it was “extremely disappointed” not to have McIlroy on its team. “However, as we have always said, it is down to the individual and of course we respect his decision, which he has taken for personal reasons,” the OCI said in a statement.

Golf returns to the Olympics in August for the first time since 1904 but the controversy over the Aug.5-21 Games has grown as more about the disease becomes known.

The mosquito-borne virus can cause crippling birth defects and, in adults, has been linked to the neurological disorder Guillain-Barre.
