The year’s third Major, The British Open, is just over a week away and already one of the biggest names in golf looks set to give the event a miss.

World number one Rory McIlroy in all likelihood will be watching the tournament on television after picking up a foot injury over the weekend. The defending champion posted this picture on his Instagram account, adding that rehabilitation of his injured foot had already started.

Total rupture of left ATFL (ankle ligament) and associated joint capsule damage in a soccer kickabout. Continuing to asses extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started... working hard to get back as soon as I can.

McIlroy’s showdown with double Major champion Jordan Spieth was expected to be one of the highlights of the tournament that starts on July 16 at St Andrews.

So far this season, the world number one hasn’t really been on top of his game, finishing fourth at The Masters back in April and a tied ninth at The US Open in June.
